This study examined the role of the press in national building. The study was limited to Government owned media houses in Uyo L.G.A, Akwa Ibom state. The process of nation building is by no means a small feat and all hands must be on deck to work effectively and efficiently both on the part of the media and the government. The study adopted the survey design. The aim of survey is to provide empirical data collected from a population of respondents on which valid conclusions can be made. The population for this study comprised of only journalists in Uyo Nigeria. Random sampling method was further used to select three hundred (300) persons as sample size. Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. Pilot study or pretest technique was used in establishing the reliability of the instrument. In this way, the questionnaire was tested for coherence, ability to elicit responses, comprehensibility and consistency. The results of the study showed that the six media organizations in the south-south geo-political zone under study had same features and synonymous constraints ranging from employment of non-professional to the appointment of unqualified persons into the management cadre of the organizations. These according to this research affect the level of productivity thus most of the studied media organizations are not keeping to the standards of modern newspaper. The study recommended that government should give all support possible to the press such as funds, information and others, so as to enable the press fully perform its role in the process of nation building.
